Visualizing an Eposodic Adventure

I originally conceived Outlaws ~ A Serial Adventure as a series of eight small books. Each book coming in at roughly 6-7k words per volume and ending on a major story cliffhanger...

For Kindle Vella's flat, episodic format, I had to break the chapters out into smaller episodes, which meant framing content in tighter pieces and adding more of the "cliffhanger-y" element to each segment.

It's been a rewarding experience, and I believe the story has benefited from the new constraints.

Currently, Kindle Vella episodes are presented as a flat list to readers.

When I'm reading a novel, I'll pay attention to the table of contents to get an idea of where I'm going, and where I've been, so-to-speak. It resembles a map for the adventure I'm on. I believe structure is important in stories, even when it's behind the curtain, so. . .

If you're reading Outlaws, here's a quick insight:

  • Outlaws was planned to be eight short books.
  • Every six episodes comprises one small book. One beginning, middle and end.
  • Each multi-part episode (part 1 and part 2) is the finale of that small book.

When I'm finished, Outlaws should reach 48 episodes.
I loosely planned for 8 books.
A beginning, a middle, and an end.

Each beginning and middle chapter has 2 episodes.
Each end chapter concludes with a 2 part episode finale.

8 Books of 3 Chapters with 2 Episodes per chapter = 48 episodes Total
8 x 3 x 2 = 48 episodes

I hope reading Outlaws has been as fun of an adventure as writing it has been!

As always,
Thanks for reading!
